2011 Set Search - A Search Engine for Students 2010
Sweet Search is a search engine that searches only the sites that have been reviewed and approved by a team of librarians, teachers, and research experts. In all there are 35,000 websites that have been reviewed and approved by Sweet Search. In addition to the general search engine, Sweet Search offers five niche search engines. The niche search engines are for Social Studies, Biographies, SweetSites (organized by grade and subject area), School Librarians, and Sweet Search 4 Me (for elementary school students).
Sweet Search can be used by visiting the site directly or you can embed Sweet Search widgets into your blog or website.
Applications for Education: If you're concerned about your students stumbling onto sites that aren't reliable, try having them use Sweet Search. You could accomplish the same thing by creating a Google Custom Search Engine, but Sweet Search has already done essentially the same thing for you. Put one of the Sweet Search widgetsinto your classroom blog or school website so that students can search reliable sites within a familiar context.

CITATION SEARCHING FOR GOOGLE SCHOLAR: Citation searching in Google Scholar
(courtesy of the KNOWBODIES WEB SITE)
Oslo IRCD Petter Naess says: "During library school I would spend every idle moment in the library with Eugene Garfield's enormous ISI citation indexes (especially the Arts & Humanities Citation Index), seeing how other people had responded to articles I was currently reading or had recently read.
"Now Google Scholar has enabled citation searching; a search for Nicholson Baker's 1994 New Yorker article Discards, for example, reveals that 53 sources have subsequently cited it (most of them disparagingly, I bet, and unfairly so). Those 53 sources are listed in descending order of their own "Cited by" frequency, with The social life of information by JS Brown and P Duguid at the top of the list, with 2815 citations. To see who in turn cited Brown and Duguid's book, just click on the "Cited by" link, and off you go. This is a fascinating new feature at Google Scholar, and you should set aside some time for it."

GOOGLE EARTH HOW TO USE:Google Earth help page.
I discovered Google Earth: Learn, Become an Explorer. Become an Explorer is a nine part series of tutorials, directions, and quizzes regarding Google Earth skills. The series takes users from the basics of navigation through advanced features of Google Earth. Perhaps the best way to describe Google Earth: Learn, Become an Explorer is as a guided scavenger hunt. Google Earth: Learn, Become an Explorercould be a great aid in teaching students how to navigate all of the great things available in Google Earth.

How to zip and unzip a file online
Here's a useful too. . PDF to Word is simple tool that extracts the text of your PDF documents and converts it to your choice of a Word document or rich text file (RTF). To use it, simply upload your chosen PDF, choose Word or RTF conversion, and enter your email address (don't forget to opt-out of marketing emails, unless you like spam). PDF to Word will email you when your file is ready for download. The reason I needed PDF to Wordtoday was that I had some PDFs of quizzes and activities that I had created and saved as PDFs before I knew the joys of Google Docs. PDF to Word made it possible for me to edit those quizzes and activities again.
FUTURES THINKING FOR ACADEMIC LIBRARIANS: HIGHER EDUCATION IN 2025.
Association of College & Research Libraries. David J. Staley and Kara L. Malen. June 2010.
"For academic librarians seeking to demonstrate the value of their libraries to their parent institutions, it is important to understand not only the current climate. We must also know what will be valued in the future so that we can begin to take appropriate action now. This document presents 26 possible scenarios based on an implications assessment of current trends, which may have an impact on all types of academic and research libraries over the next 15 years. The scenarios represent themes relating to academic culture, demographics, distance education, funding, globalization, infrastructure/facilities, libraries, political climate, publishing industry, societal values, students/learning, and technology." http://bit.ly/8YsxsI [PDF format, 33 pages]

Another similar web site is: http://www.bookbrowse.com/read-alikes/ and this one:
